When 20 Words Turn Into 600 Likes: Pareidolia, Hypnagogic States, and Why Your Brain Shows You Demonic Faces

Image
I didn’t expect it. A quick reply to someone’s TikTok about massage and seeing demon faces in her mind’s eye suddenly took off. The comment itself only got about fifteen replies, but it racked up nearly 600 likes. Most of the replies were people thanking me for putting logic into something they didn’t quite understand, and a few massage therapists even chimed in to say,  “Yes, that’s exactly what it is.”  Honestly, I was both surprised and amused — it wasn’t a lecture, just twenty words in passing. But it struck a chord. Here’s what I explained there, and what I’ll expand on here. When you’re lying face-down on a massage table, relaxed, and your body starts drifting toward sleep, you’re moving into what’s called the  hypnagogic state . It’s that liminal space where you’re not fully awake, but not fully asleep either. Your brainwaves shift gears from fast, alert beta waves, through calmer alpha, and into dreamlike theta. In this twilight zone, your sensory filters l...

Science Doesn’t Care About Your Snide Comments

Every time someone trots out the tired line  “don’t tell me how to lose weight, it’s just calories in, calories out”  they reveal how little they’ve kept up with the last decade of actual science. That phrase might sound tough, but it’s outdated and lazy. It ignores the mountain of clinical trials that have  already  proven obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease with complex hormonal, metabolic, and neurobiological roots. Pretending it’s simply about willpower is like telling a cancer patient to “just stop growing tumors.” GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medications are not a fad, not a shortcut, and not “cheating.” They are evidence-based therapies with outcomes measured in reduced cardiovascular events, better kidney health, improved sleep apnea, and sustainable fat loss. Trials like SURMOUNT, SURPASS, SELECT, FLOW, and more have changed the entire medical landscape. The data are so compelling that these studies are published in  The New England Journal of Medicine ...

Out of the Loop by Design: The Neuroscience Behind My Discomfort with Gossip

Image
My nerdy brain loves this stuff. Anatomy and physiology have always been some of my favorite sciences to study, so it makes perfect sense that I would look for answers there. From the time I can remember, gossip has made me physically uncomfortable. I do not just dislike it, I have a visceral reaction when I am in a room and someone leaves, and suddenly the conversation turns to them. My body tightens, my chest feels heavy, and my instinct is to get away. For years I thought this was just a personal quirk, but science explains something much deeper. The brain has a region called the  anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) . It sits in the frontal part of the cingulate gyrus, wrapping around the corpus callosum, and it is a powerful regulator of social and emotional experiences. The ACC is part of what neuroscientists call the “social pain network.” Just like physical pain signals when we touch something hot or sharp, social pain lights up in the same brain regions, including the AC...

Three Years on Tirzepatide – My 61st Birthday Reflection

Image
Today, August 19th, 2025, I celebrate not only my 61st birthday but also three full years since I started tirzepatide on August 19th, 2022. Birthdays always bring a moment of reflection, but this one feels especially powerful. Three years ago, I was weighed down by more than just age and numbers on a scale. I was living with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, PCOS, insulin resistance, and hypoglycemia. My inflammation was sky high, my thyroid and blood pressure medications kept piling up, and I felt like my body was working against me no matter how hard I tried. Now, at 61, I’m standing in a completely different place. My thyroid medication has been cut down to a quarter of what it once was, my blood pressure meds reduced by half, and my Hashimoto’s antibodies slashed in half. The chronic inflammation that once ruled my days has eased in ways I never thought possible. My body feels resilient, my systems are calmer, and the fireflies of inflammation that once swarmed me, 116 of them, are gone. Ye...
